Can drinking kerosene lead to death?

i have read this news that a woman was subjected to harment by her inlaws. they made her drink kerosene to kill her. in the attempt the child she was bearing in the uterus died and she was saved by the doctors by a margin . but i think this news to be fake. so i want this question to be answered.
