Do you believe the Pope that he knew nothing of the ual abuses and the cover ups?

Benedict claims that the Bishops of Rome acted unilaterally in protecting their paedophile priests from public prosecution. How strange that they all behaved in the same manner. Could it be something to do with the dictate they had received from the Vatican under his predecessors rule and with his complete knowledge?
