What euphemisms were used back when one did not state they were pregnant?

When my niece called me to tell me she was pregnant I said "So the rabbit died, huh?" She was silent for a long time. I finally asked her if she had ever heard that term before and she hadn't. I had to explain where the phrase came from. To top it off she's a vegetarian who works for the ASPCA. She was appalled and I felt like I ruined her moment. lol.
